But then I figured that embarrassing story is probably more useful to someone than another polished guide written by someone pretending they got it right immediately. So here we are. I decided to start a Shopify store with basically no idea what I was actually getting into and it showed.

The Stuff Nobody Puts in Their Success Story

You know those posts. Someone drops a screenshot of their Shopify dashboard showing forty thousand dollars in a month and writes three paragraphs about how they figured out the secret. I read probably a dozen of those before I started and every single one of them made me feel like I was missing something obvious that everyone else already knew.

What I actually think now, having been through this properly, is that those posts select for the people who got lucky early or who had advantages they do not mention, an existing audience, startup capital, a partner doing half the work, a product that happened to go viral for reasons that had nothing to do with skill. The average person following that advice does not get those results because the advice is missing all the context that made it work for that specific person in that specific situation.

I am not saying do not read those posts. I am saying read them the way you would read someone describing the one time they hit a royal flush. Interesting story, not a strategy.

Why I Even Ended Up on Shopify

This was not a calculated decision if I am being completely honest. A friend of mine had been running a small online store for about a year and was doing reasonably well with it and I asked her what she used. She said Shopify. That was genuinely the extent of my initial research.

After that, I researched the platform a bit more and went down a rabbit hole comparing different options for several days. One experiment involved setting up a WooCommerce store because multiple people had told me it was cheaper and more flexible. A full Saturday disappeared into that process, and by the evening the setup had become so frustrating that I closed my laptop and did not return to it until the next morning. Maybe WooCommerce is great if you already know WordPress well. I did not, and I did not want to learn it just to sell things online.

Shopify felt like it was built by people who assumed you wanted to spend your time on your business rather than on your website. That assumption matched what I actually wanted so I paid for a month and started figuring it out.

The First Store Was an Education in What Not to Do

My Product Choice Was Based Entirely on What I Liked

I made candles. I liked making candles, I was reasonably good at it, people in my life told me they were lovely, and I thought that was enough of a foundation to build a store on. It was not.

The problem was not the candles. The problem was that I had done zero work to understand whether there was a reachable group of people online who wanted to buy candles from a brand they had never heard of, or how I would find those people if they existed, or what would make someone choose my candles over the ten thousand other candle stores already on the internet. Those are not small questions. They are basically the whole question. And I had not asked any of them before spending money on supplies, packaging, a domain name, and three months of Shopify fees.

I Confused Making the Store With Building a Business

This is something I look back on and cringe at a little because it is so obvious in retrospect. Weeks went into getting the store to look exactly right. Font choices alone took far longer than I would like to admit. The homepage layout was redesigned multiple times in search of the perfect look. Even the color of the add to cart button became something I obsessed over.

Meanwhile I had no plan for how a single human being was going to find out the store existed. I was decorating a room that had no door. All that time I spent making things look nice was time I was not spending on the actual hard problem which was customer acquisition. I did not even fully understand that customer acquisition was a separate job from store building until I had already burned through a couple of months doing the wrong thing.

I Thought Cheap Prices Were My Competitive Advantage

Every candle I sold was priced lower than comparable products I found online. I thought I was being smart. I was being scared and calling it strategy.

Cheap prices actually communicated to buyers that the product was probably not that good. From a financial perspective, those low prices made it nearly impossible to invest in advertising because there was very little profit left after costs. They also attracted shoppers who cared only about finding the lowest price and had little interest in becoming repeat customers or recommending the brand to others. Genuinely one of the worst decisions I made and I made it consistently for about four months before someone sat me down and explained margin to me like I was a child, which at that point I basically was when it came to running a business.

The Gap Between the First Store and the Second One

I closed the first store quietly after about five months. Not dramatically, I just stopped paying for it and let it disappear. I sat with the experience for a while before I tried again because I did not want to repeat the same mistakes with a different product and call it a fresh start.

The gap between those two attempts was about four months and I spent a good chunk of that time just reading. Not reading about Shopify specifically but reading about customers, about what makes people buy things, about how small businesses actually find their first hundred customers. I read some stuff about copywriting that changed how I thought about communicating entirely. I read case studies from businesses I found interesting and tried to understand not just what they did but why it worked.

By the time I was ready to start a Shopify store for the second time I was starting from a meaningfully different place and it showed in almost every decision I made.

What I Did Differently the Second Time

I Figured Out the Customer Before I Figured Out the Product

This sounds backwards and it felt backwards when I first tried it. The conventional logic is you find a product you want to sell and then you find people to sell it to. What I did instead was spend about three weeks understanding a specific type of person before I had fully committed to what I was going to sell them.

I found online spaces where a particular kind of buyer was already hanging out, spending money, and talking about what they wanted. Their conversations revealed a lot about how they thought and what mattered to them. Reviews of products they had purchased highlighted recurring frustrations and unmet expectations. Over time, patterns emerged in the language they used to describe problems and the improvements they wished existed. By the end of those three weeks I had a clearer picture of that person than I had of most people I had known for years and I had a much better sense of what kind of product would actually fit into their life in a useful way.

I Treated the Store Like a Sales Tool Not a Creative Project

The second store looks fine. It is clean and easy to navigate and nothing about it is embarrassing. But I probably spent one tenth the time on aesthetics that I spent on the first one. Instead I put that time into things that actually affected whether someone would buy.

I rewrote the product descriptions probably four times each before I was satisfied. Not to make them sound impressive but to make them answer the questions a real buyer would have standing there on the fence. I thought about every reason someone might hesitate and tried to address it somewhere on the page. I made the returns policy easy to find because I remembered how much I personally distrusted stores where that information was buried or vague.

None of that is interesting to talk about but all of it affected the numbers.

I Built a Small Audience Before I Needed Them to Buy Anything

About two months before I launched I started an email list. No store, no products for sale yet, just a simple page explaining what was coming and a reason to sign up. I told people what I was building and why and what they could expect.

Building that list was slow and sometimes felt pointless. By launch day I had somewhere around three hundred people on it. That is not a large number in the grand scheme of things but it meant that when I launched I was not launching into silence. I had three hundred people who had already raised their hand and said they were interested. That first week of sales was nothing like the first week of my previous store and the difference was almost entirely that list.

Getting Traffic Was Harder Than Anyone Made It Sound

I want to be straight with you about this because it is where I see the most unrealistic expectations and the most people giving up.

Getting consistent traffic to a store you just started is genuinely difficult and expensive if you are not patient. I ran paid ads for about two months on the second store and the results were mixed at best. Some weeks I made back what I spent, some weeks I did not. The problem was not that ads do not work. The problem was that I did not yet understand my customer well enough to speak to them precisely in an ad, and imprecise ads are expensive ways to learn things you could have figured out more cheaply.

What worked better for me was finding the specific corners of the internet where my buyers already existed and being genuinely useful there. This is vague advice and I know it is vague but it has to be because it looks completely different depending on what you sell and who you sell it to. The common thread is that you are putting yourself in front of people who already want what you have rather than paying to interrupt people who are in the middle of something else.

Search traffic took months to build but once it started it kept coming without requiring me to spend money every week to keep it alive. That reliability changed how the business felt to run.

Month Five Was the Hardest and Most Important Month

Around month four or five of the second store I had a period of about three weeks where I was genuinely unsure whether I was going to keep going. Revenue existed but it was inconsistent. Some weeks were encouraging and some weeks were demoralizing and I could not fully predict which kind of week I was going to have.

I talked to someone during that period who had been running an online business for a long time and I told her I was thinking about giving up. She asked me what I had learned in the past five months that I had not known when I started. I started listing things and kept going for longer than I expected. She pointed out that I was describing a person who was significantly better at this than they had been five months ago and asked why I thought that person could not eventually figure out the rest.

That conversation did not magically fix anything. But it reframed the slow period as something that was building rather than something that was failing and that reframe was enough to keep me going through it.

What the Business Looks Like Now and What I Think Made the Difference

The store is not a life changing income. I want to be honest about that because I think a lot of people in this space oversell their results and it creates expectations that make everyone else feel like they are doing something wrong. It is a meaningful income that has grown consistently and that I can see a real future in if I keep doing the things that have been working.

What made the difference between the first attempt and the current one was not a better product or a better platform or better luck. It was doing the thinking before the doing. Understanding the customer before worrying about the store. Pricing in a way that made the business actually viable. Being patient enough with traffic to let the slower channels build rather than spending money on ads before I had earned the right to run them effectively.

When people ask me now about how to start a Shopify store my honest answer is spend the first month not touching Shopify at all. Spend it figuring out who you are selling to and whether you have a real path to reaching them. Everything after that is just execution and execution is the easier part.

Honestly the first thing I want to say is that I almost did not write this because I spent a long time feeling embarrassed about how badly my first attempt went.
